1
Plant the orchid in an orchid mix made for the type of orchid it is. Epiphytic orchids, or orchids with air roots, need a mix that retains moisture well without getting water logged. Terrestrial orchids need a regular potting mix to grow in. All orchids require a well-drained pot that is large enough for their roots to grow in. Growing medium and pot size can affect blooms.

2
Keep the orchid within its temperature range. Most tropical orchids need daytime temperatures from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temperatures from 75 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Some orchids need temperatures to drop below 70 degree Fahrenheit at night for four to five weeks to bloom.

Fertilize the orchid with an orchid fertilizer once a month during its growing season. Sprinkle 1 tsp. of the water-soluble fertilizer in the potting mix before you water the orchid to encourage blooms.
-
4
Place the orchid in the proper amount of light for its type. High light orchids need bright, direct sunlight while medium light orchids need brightly lit area out of direct sunlight. Orchids need the proper amount of light to bloom.

5
Keep the proper amount of humidity around the orchid. Tropical varieties need humidity up to 80 percent. Put a humidifier near the orchid to keep it moist and help it bloom.
