How Make Word Templates

Designing a Word template expedites future document creation. Creating a template requires no extra formatting or document-creation knowledge. The only extra step required for making a Word template lies in the saving process. Instead of saving the template as a normal document, which is Word's default setting, you must specify the template format in the "Save as type" field. The file saves to your templates folder for future access.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open a new Word document.

    • 2

Design the template using the same formatting options as you would a document.

    • 3

Click "File" in the top-left corner when you are ready to save the template.

    • 4

Click "Save as." A box opens with save options.

    • 5

Name the template in the "File Name" field in the "Save as" dialog window.

    • 6

Click the "Save as type" drop-down arrow and click "Word Template."

    • 7

Click "Save." The template saves to Word's "Templates" folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Insert placeholder text in a document to expedite filling in fields for future use. For instance, if you want the template to include a name and date section, Type "Name" and "Date" where you want that information placed.
