How Can I Get a CDL With the DMV?
A commercial driver's license can be obtained from your local Department of Motor Vehicles. You need a CDL license if you want to drive large specialty vehicles such as tractor-trailers or buses. Drivers are able to obtain a CDL by taking and passing both a written and driving skills CDL test. CDL testing materials and qualifications vary depending on the state you reside in, so tests and testing materials are not identical all across the country.

Contact your state Department of Motor Vehicles and verify that you are eligible to receive a CDL license from the state. CDL licenses are only issued to individuals with relatively clean driving records.

Determine what class of CDL you intend to obtain. A Class A CDL will allow you to drive tractor-trailer vehicles that exceed a gross weight rating of 26,001 lbs. A Class B CDL will allow you to drive single vehicles that exceed the weight of 26,001 lbs. A Class C CDL is given to drivers of vehicles that do not exceed the weight rating for Class A or B but transport more than 15 passengers or hazardous materials.

Obtain this year's copy of your state's CDL handbook from the DMV. Study it until you are completely comfortable and have a clear understanding of all the information presented in the handbook.

Take and pass your written CDL test. If you are able to pass this test, then you will receive a CDL learner's permit and be allowed to take the CDL driving skills test. If you pass both, you will receive your CDL.

Tips & Warnings
If you are having difficulty passing the tests required to earn your CDL, you can attend a CDL training school or program where you are taught the material in a classroom setting and given driving time and instructions for the driving test.
