DIY: Bud Vase

A bud vase is a small vase that typically holds between one to three flowers. If you wish to be creative, you can create your own clay bud vases that showcase your creativity. This craft requires only a bit of concentration. Once you have perfected the technique, you can create these bud vases and give them to friends. A bud vase is a simple but elegant accent to add to your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the area you will be working on with newspaper. You can use a plastic tablecloth as well.

    • 2

Roll out your clay until it is a pancake shape. The suggested thickness is 1/4-inch thick, however if you wish it to be a little thicker, that is fine. Cut a straight line across the bottom of the pancake with the plastic knife. The straight edge you created will be the base of your vase.

    • 3

Take some sheets of your newspaper and roll it tightly up until it is a cylinder about an inch around. Place this on top of the clay. Pick up one edge of the clay and roll the clay around the newspaper. This will make the cylinder shape of your vase. Set this aside.

    • 4

Take the piece you cut off and roll it out again to the same thickness. This will prove the bottom for your vase. Take the rolled up clay and carefully remove the rolled up newspaper from the inside. Stand the rolled clay on the base and draw the bottom out with a toothpick or plastic knife.

    • 5

Score the base using a toothpick. This means that you will draw little lines on the top of the base you just cut out. They should look like little hashmarks. Dip your finger in some water and gently wet the lines you made. This acts like a glue for the clay and will help it stick together.

    • 6

Place the rolled up clay on top of the base and using your finger, gently seal the two pieces together. Rub your finger along the place where the two are joined. Smooth a damp finger over the line until it disappears. Allow the vase to dry until it hardens. If you wish, you can use acrylic paint to paint and decorate your bud vase.
