How to Put Snaps in Leather
When doing leather work--particularly if you are making jewlery, purses or a jacket--you may need to install snaps onto the leather. Snaps are pressed onto both sides of the leather, securing themselves to the garment with clamping power. You do need a few special tools to clamp the snaps on correctly so that they will remain in place for long periods of time.

1
Find the location on the leather piece where you want to place the snap. Then, determine on which side of your project you want to install the socket and on which side you want to install stud of the snap. Place the leather punch tool over the exact spot where you want to install the snap, then strike the back of the punch with a hammer to put a hole through the leather.

2
Install the appropriate dies for the snap tool. For example, if you want to have the socket on this portion, use the socket die set, and vice versa.

3
Install the post end of the snap into the leather with your hands. The flat portion of the post end should be positioned on what will be the inside of the leather material. Insert the top of the snap into the bottom of the snap tool.

4
Put the back of the post end against the top die on the snap tool. Slowly pull the handle on the snap tool until the top of the snap engages the post end, creating a complete snap.
