How to Find the Person Who Sent Me a Check

If you've received a check in the mail, you'll always be able to find out exactly who it is from in just a couple of seconds. All proper checks, whether they're cashier's checks or personal checks, need to contain a few pieces of identifying information. Also, the envelope will likely contain information you can use to determine the sender. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the upper-left corner of the check. On most personal and business checks, this will be the location of the name and contact information for the sender. For a personal check, this will likely give the sender's name and address. For a business check, this will give the name of the business and any applicable address that represents that company.

    • 2

Look in the lower-right corner. This is the "Memo" section. This won't necessarily give you the sender's name but, if it is filled out, it will likely have useful information. For example, if the memo section says "For services rendered -- March 2011," you can check work you did during that time to narrow down the list of possible candidates.

Examine the outside of the envelope. It should contain your name and address and the sender's. Read any papers that came with the check to see if the sender's name is listed.
