How to Install New DVD Drives on a PC

Most desktop computers are designed with expandability in mind. This includes upgrading certain internal components, such as the optical drive. Some older computers were originally equipped with a CD-ROM drive or CD burner and have no DVD playback capabilities. Installing a new DVD drive into a desktop computer gives the PC the capability to view DVDs as well as use software and other types of information located on DVD media, such as a DVD-ROM and DVD-R.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power off the computer.

    • 2

Unplug the computer from the electrical outlet.

    • 3

Remove the computer's side cover. Depending on the type of computer case, this may be done by removing screws or by moving a lever.

    • 4

Insert the DVD drive into an empty 5.25-inch slot. If no slots are available, remove an existing 5.25-inch drive, such as an older CD-ROM drive.

    • 5

Connect the power and data cables to the new DVD drive.

    • 6

Replace the side cover of the computer.

    • 7

Plug in and power on the computer. The DVD drive is detected automatically by both the computer and operating system.

Tips & Warnings

  • DVD burners are a cost-effective way to both read and write DVD discs.
