How to Plant Cucumbers With Squash

Cucumber and squash are both cucurbits, the plant type that includes cucumber, squash, watermelons, muskmelons, pumpkins and gourds. Squash is either fast growing summer squash or slow growing winter squash. Both can be grown with cucumbers, but the summer squash will fruit more quickly. Like all vegetables, cucumbers and squash need full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. Both squash and cucumbers are planted from seed.

Instructions

1. Select a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the surface of the soil and work it into the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches to improve the quality of the soil and to add nutrients.

2. Wait one week until the last frost in your area has passed. Plant the seeds when the soil temperature is at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Build 6 inch tall mounds about 4 to 6 feet apart. Dig a 1 inch deep hole in the top of the mound. Plant two to three cucumber seeds and two to three squash seeds in the hole. Cover the hole with soil.

4. Water the mounds until moist. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge.
