How to Decorate a Horseshoe Cake

Make a two-tier round cake topped with a horseshoe-shaped cake for a luck-themed birthday party, bon voyage trip, graduation party or other special event. The cake is simple enough to make that even a novice cake decorator can prepare the cake in just a few hours. The cake can even be made up to 48 hours in advance for a less hectic party day schedule.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cake mixes
  • 8-inch round cake pans (2)
  • 6-inch round cake pans (2)
  • Horseshoe-shaped cake pan
  • Butter (or margarine)
  • Flour
  • Cake tray
  • Buttercream icing
  • 4 packages fondant
  • Rolling pin
  • Fondant smoothing tool
  • Sharp knife
  • 4 wooden dowels
  • 2-inch tall cake pillar
  • Horseshoe-shaped cookie cutter
  • Prepare two cakes. Prepare a total of five cake pans; two 8-inch round cake pans, two 6-inch round cake pans and one small horseshoe-shaped cake pan. Spread a layer of butter or margarine on the bottom and sides of each, pour a little bit of flour in each and tap out any excess flour. Pour the batter into the cake pans and bake according to the recipe's directions. If you do not have a horseshoe pan, prepare another 6-inch cake pan and cut a horseshoe shape from the baked and cooled cake.

  • Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 30 minutes. Gently loosen the cakes from the pan and place them on a clean surface to cool for an additional 2 hours.

  • Stack one 8-inch cake on top of the other by spreading a layer of buttercream icing on the top of one and placing the other cake on top. Repeat this step with the 6-inch cakes.

  • Roll out three packages of different color fondant to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use colors that match the party's color scheme. Two sheets of fondant should be rolled large enough to each cover one of the cake stacks and the other should be large enough to cover the horseshoe cake. Place the fondant sheets on top of the cakes and smooth out the fondant with a fondant or cake icing smoother.

  • Insert two wooden dowels into the 8-inch cake and place the 6-inch stacked cakes on top of the dowels. Press down gently until the 6-inch cake sits on top of the 8-inch cake.

  • Cover the horseshoe cake in fondant and smooth the top and edges. Cut off any excess fondant with a sharp knife.

  • Press a 2-inch tall cake pillar onto the top of the 6-inch cakes, all the way to one side of the cake. Insert two wooden dowels into the cake on the opposite side of the pillar. Space them apart so that each end of the horseshoe will fit onto one of the dowels. Place the horseshoe cake on top of the pillar and press the ends onto the dowels.

  • Roll out a package of fondant in a color that complements the previous colors. Cut out small horseshoe shapes with a horseshoe cookie cutter. Moisten the back of each horseshoe and press them against the sides of the cake in a vine-like pattern up the tiers. The cake will require approximately 50 to 60 small-size horseshoes.
