How to Remove Cove Base Adhesive

Cove base adhesive is used to attach cove base, or wall base as it is sometimes called, to the base where the wall meets the floor. The base is generally made of a vinyl or rubber substance, and the adhesive assures a positive adhering contact between the base of the wall and the floor. Modern cove base adhesives are all made out of latex acrylic for ease of use and ease during initial clean-up. In all cases of cove base adhesive removal, rubber gloves must be worn.

Things You'll Need

  • Soapy dishwater solution
  • Cove base adhesive remover
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Rag
  • Rubber gloves
  • Remove wet cove base adhesive with a rag dipped into a soapy dishwater solution. Dip the rag into the solution, wring it out and wipe the wet cove based adhesive away. Rinse the area with a rag dipped in fresh water, and allow the area to dry.

  • Remove hardened cove base adhesive with denatured alcohol. Dip a rag into the alcohol and wipe it over the adhesive. Keep the adhesive moist. The adhesive will soften up after several minutes and can then be wiped away.

  • Remove cove base adhesive with a cove base adhesive remover. It can be found at any hardware store. Dip a rag into the cove base adhesive remover and wipe it over the adhesive. Keep the adhesive moist. In minutes the adhesive will turn to a jelly-like substance that can be easily wiped away.
