How to Enclose Below the Deck
When you're enclosing the area below a deck, it is important to allow for airflow. This will reduce mold growth and allow the space below the deck to remain dry. Lattice is one of the best solutions for enclosing a deck because it is cost-effective and allows plenty of airflow. When installing lattice, you can create hinged box frames to allow for easy access under the deck. This gives you additional room for storage. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the spaces between the posts or columns, using a tape measure, and then measure from the bottom railing of the deck to the top of the ground. This gives you the rough dimensions for your framing. For example, let us assume your dimensions are 60 inches long by 40 inches tall.
-
2
Create a frame out of 3-inch by 1-inch treated lumber. Make the frame ½-inch shorter than the width of your measurement and 1-inch shorter than the height. This allows for adequate clearances. Use wood screws to secure the frame together. If the frame is longer than 24 inches, place a vertical piece of 3-inch by 1-inch treated lumber in the center of the frame to add rigidity.

3
Cut a piece of lattice to measure the same height and width as your frame. Use a circular saw or a band saw to make the cuts. Notch out pieces on the top of the lattice for your hinges so they can rest flush against the 3-inch by 1-inch treated lumber.
-
4
Place the lattice over the frame and secure it, using wood screws and a screwdriver.
-
5
Secure the hinges to the top of the frame, using wood screws and a screwdriver.
-
6
Secure the other side of the hinges to the 3-inch by 1-inch treated lumber. Have a friend hold the lattice frame in place while you secure the hinges.
