Driving a big rig can be a daunting task, especially if you're only used to driving standard-sized vehicles. First, get rid of this fear if you're planning to take a trip in a big rig, or are interested in taking a job as a driver. Establish a level of comfort driving a vehicle of such magnitude, so that you'll feel in control when behind the wheel. This comfort zone will allow you to drive your best and be safe traveling long distances.

      Take the proper amount of training necessary to get behind the wheel of a big rig. Different states have different requirements for getting a licence, so you may be required to take some classes anyway. You can always go a step further and sign up for behind-the-wheel classes so that you're comfortable getting behind the wheel. Your instructor will take you through closed-off courses as well as on the road for live situations to build your competence and confidence.

      Learn the limitations of the vehicle. This will come in handy if you have your own big rig that you plan to take on a trip. You can get comfortable maneuvering the vehicle either in an empty parking lot of after dark while traffic decreases. You will face a learning curve with turns, braking, accelerating and pretty much every other aspect of operating the vehicle. Getting comfortable with how the vehicle operates will take away some of the mystery, so that you fully know what to expect when behind the wheel. Knowing what to expect will go a long way to alleviate fear.

      Practice backing the vehicle. While your main fear may be navigating on the road, also get comfortable maneuvering your big rig in all directions. You may face situations where you're required to back up or park, or back your way our of tight situations where traffic may have stopped, among other circumstances. It's better to be comfortable backing up the vehicle in non-pressure situations.

      Take as many trips as possible. Once you learn how to drive a big rig, you won't forget, but use a big rig as often as possible so that you can maintain your comfort level.
