How to Copy Fonts to Other Computers in Windows Vista

If you've amassed a collection of impressive fonts on one personal computer, you might want to copy the fonts and use them on another computer. To transfer your favorite fonts, you will need to find the font files from the hard drive of your Windows Vista computer, copy them onto removable media, such as an external drive or recordable CD or DVD disk and then install them on the additional computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the recordable CD or DVD disk into the computer's CD/DVD drive or connect the external hard drive to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

    • 2

Click "Start" on the computer's desktop toolbar and select "Computer." This will open a window displaying all computer drives.

    • 3

Click "Start" again. Type "fonts" into the search box.

    • 4

Look through the search results to find a folder icon labeled with "Fonts." Click the link to open the folder.

    • 5

Highlight the font files you wish to copy. Drag and drop the files from the fonts folder to the correct drive for the external media. This is usually the "F:" drive for an external hard disk or the "E:" drive for a DVD or CD. This process will copy the files from the computer rather than permanently move them.

    • 6

Wait for the font files to copy to the removable media. Remove the disk or unplug the external hard drive from the computer.

    • 7

Insert the disk or connect the external drive to the additional computer.

    • 8

Click "Start" and then "Computer." Double-click on the removable media drive to open it.

    • 9

Highlight the font files and then right-click them.

    • 10

Click "Install" from the drop-down menu. The fonts will install onto the computer from the removable media.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of right-clicking the fonts to install them you can also drag and drop them from the removable media to the "Fonts" folder under "Control Panel." Access this from the "Start" button on the desktop toolbar.
