Connecting to the Wireless Internet

When you use the Internet at home --- particularly if you plan to stay in the same place while using it --- the choice between using a wired or wireless connection is an inconsequential one. If you need to use the Internet on the go, however, wireless Internet is the most convenient and flexible option. So long as you have a compatible laptop computer, connecting to the Internet wirelessly is a a simple, straightforward affair.

Instructions

Get in range of a wireless Internet connection. For example, visit a coffee shop or library that advertises having Wi-Fi. If your location isn't near a wireless Internet portal, you won't be able to access the Internet wirelessly.

Open your computer's wireless network manager, located at the bottom-right corner of your screen and denoted by a triangular icon on the taskbar. Double-click the icon to pull up a list of wireless networks.

Connect to the wireless network for which you have a password. Click the name of the wireless network, then enter the password if there is one. If you don't have a password, ask the network administrator or, if you're in a coffee shop or other retail venue, the attendant on duty. Click "Connect" and wait five to 10 seconds for the connection to be established. Begin using the Internet.
