How Can I Check on a VIN Number?

A vehicle identification number, or VIN for short, is an 11- to 17-character code. First implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1981 for all road vehicles, the VIN identifies key information about a vehicle including where it was built and the manufacturer. Vehicles made during or after 1981 have a 17-character VIN.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the vehicle on the driver's side. Look for a small metal tag on either the lower left-hand corner of the dashboard or the driver's side door.

    • 2

Record the VIN, which consists of seventeen numbers and letters on a piece of paper. Keep the number handy when you complete your research.

    • 3

Visit your state's Department of Motor Vehicle's website. Find a "Vehicle History Reports" tab. Enter the VIN for which you wish to obtain a free vehicle history report. Click on the "Search" tab.

    • 4

Request a detailed vehicle history report from Carfax, a company that offers free vehicle history reports. Enter the VIN in the search box. Click "Get the Carfax."
