How to Set the Color on an HDTV

You may be surprised when you first set up your new HDTV that the picture is not as good as it was in the store. This is because the TV's settings have not yet been calibrated. To get the best picture possible, you will need to calibrate the settings to match the viewing conditions of your room. Color is especially important because if the colors are off, if they are bleeding or if they are too monochromatic, this will through off the rest of the picture, no matter how sharp the image is.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your TV and let it warm up about 30 minutes. This lets the TV get up to optimal operating temperature, which allows you to properly adjust the settings for real-world viewing.

    • 2

Tune the TV to a picture of a face and pause it. The best way to set color is to set it so that skin tones are accurate.

    • 3

Press the "Menu" button on your TV's remote control to open the settings menu.

    • 4

Select the picture settings option. This may vary from TV to TV, so refer to your TV's owner's manual for specific instructions on how to open the settings menu.

    • 5

Use the arrow buttons on the remote to scroll down to the "Color" setting.

    • 6

Adjust the color setting--called "saturation" on some TV sets--so the skin tone on the image is accurate. If it is too red, bring the color setting down so the flesh tone is more even. If the other colors are too drab, you can bring the color setting up a little.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your TV has color settings such as warm, cool, low or high, set it to either warm or low.

  • You can also use the THX Optimizer, which is found on most DVD and Blu-ray discs, or another DVD calibration tool to properly set your TV's color and other picture settings.
