Instructions

    • 1

Make a waterproof poncho by first choosing a trash bag. Select a trash bag with thicker material for the most waterproof results. Thicker trash bags also will keep you warmer and are less prone to wear and tear. Choose a trash bag that is not black if you want to wear a poncho with a bit more style and color.

Hold the trash bag in front of you with the top facing down; this hole will eventually become what pulls down over your head and torso. The closed bottom end of the trash bag should be facing upward.

    • 3

Cut two arm holes in the bottom corners of the trash bag and a larger head hole in between; these holes will be where you push your head and arms through. Cut holes big enough to fit your arms and head but don't cut too much away from the trash bag because it might let in extra water. Cut two 4-inch-diameter holes for the arms and a 6-inch-diameter hole for your head. You can always cut away more if the holes are too small.

Alternatively, don't cut any arm holes if you want to keep the lengths of your arms waterproof as well. Just cut a head hole and tuck your arms inside the trash bag.

Make a waterproof poncho by using an old shower curtain. This type is much sturdier and more secure than a trash bag but it requires some sewing technique. Cut a 60-by-60-inch square in the curtain. Cut a head hole at the center of the square. Sew in the edges with nylon thread and leather needles and place a sheet of tissue paper in between the sewing machine feed and the curtain to prevent the vinyl from sticking to the machine feed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trash bag and shower curtain ponchos are suitable for summer festivals; the material is thin enough to keep you cool in the heat and it won't take up much space in your tent bag.

  • Homemade poncho projects are an engaging activity to do with children.
