1. Find out what the birder enjoys most about birding: birding travel, feeding birds, reading about birds, collecting specific bird items, wearing bird-related clothing.

2. Choose a gift that reflects the birder's favorite activities. Items often appreciated by birders include bird-related stationery or note cards, T-shirts, bird jewelry, books about birds, glass or porcelain birds, bird feeders and household items with birds illustrated on them.

3. Buy a gift certificate to a birding specialty store or bookstore. Serious birders usually have extensive libraries of bird books. A gift certificate will allow the birder to choose a book he or she may not already have.

4. Make a gift basket of things birders often use: bottled water, insect repellent, sunscreen, lip balm, snacks, checklists, a pass to a wildlife refuge, a disposable camera, maps and a bird-finding guide.
