How to Replant the Seeds in a Clematis
Clematis, a flowering vine with over 400 species, comes in many colors and shapes and appears in the spring and early summer. After the flowers wilt, the plants develop seed pods containing black seeds that can be collected by gardeners. While clematis seeds can be planted immediately after harvest, they require a period of cold before they can germinate. Depending on the clematis variety, germination takes six months to three years. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Seed tray
- Soilless seed starter
- Sand
- Water
- Clear plastic storage bag
- 4- to 5-inch-diameter plant pots
- Balanced liquid plant fertilizer
Instructions

1
Wait until the summer or early fall, when clematis plants develop green seed pods where flowers previously bloomed. When the seed pods turn brown, pull them gently off the vine.
-
2
Place the seed pods on top of a white piece of paper and pull them open with your fingers to reveal the seeds. Some clematis pods do not contain any seeds.
-
-
3
Fill a seed tray half full of sterile seed-starting mix. Place one clematis seed into each of the compartments in the tray and cover the seeds with a quarter inch of sand.
-
4
Water the soil until it is barely damp and place the tray inside a clear plastic storage bag, sealing it tightly.
-
5
Place the tray outside in full shade such as under a covered porch. Leave the tray there throughout the winter, which is required to break dormancy. If desired, you can also place the tray in a refrigerator.
-
6
Wait until the early spring and move the tray from the shade into an area with partial or filtered sunlight. Open the bag and check the soil moisture, adding more water to dampen the soil if needed. Keep the tray in this location until the clematis seedlings emerge.
-
7
Fill 4- to 5-inch-diameter plant pots three-quarters full of soilless plant mix and transplant each seedling to its own pot once it reaches an inch tall. Bury the seedling roots in the soil with all of the green portion exposed.
-
8
Place the pots in a warm location with filtered sunlight and water as needed. Don't allow the soil to dry out. Fertilize once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
