Learn how to draw a somberero from a worm's eye view.

Drawing a still life realistically begins with being able to see the construction of an object, or put another way, the ability to draw what you see. A still life drawing is an arrangement of objects or may be just a singular object. Drawing sombreros is great practice for new artist since it has simple lines. It is best to have a variety of sombreros to draw, but if sombreros are not available, use an image instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a viewpoint for your drawing by placing your sombreros at a bird's eye view, worm's view or a human eye's view. A bird's eye view is looking at the top of the sombrero, a worm's eye view is looking up at the sombreros and an eye level view is looking at the sombreros from eye level.

    • 2

Drawing a still life realistically requires accurate proportions. Before beginning, notice the proportional relationship between sides and top to bottom. For example, the top should be about half the size of the bottom.

    • 3

Create a source of lights from one direction to create contrasts between areas. Having one light source will help to avoid confusion where to shade in areas for a 3-D look. If possible turn off all other lights.

    • 4

Begin your drawing by sketching out the basic shapes of the sombrero; search for lines such as the rim of the sombrero or the upside down U of the top part. Sketch it out lightly with a pencil or a piece of charcoal.

    • 5

Check your proportions and adjust as necessary. When you are happy with your outline, trace over by pressing down harder with your pencil or charcoal on the correct lines. Then erase any incorrect lines.

    • 6

Add details to the sombreros such as any design patterns, creases and light sources. Shade any shadows by applying heavier pencil or charcoal marks. Keep the area where the light is strong clean of any marks. Erase the light area if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once finished, outline your sombreros with an art pen.

  • Paint your sombreros or color in with color pencils
