How to Camp in a 4Runner
The 4Runner is a mid-sized SUV manufactured by Toyota. It has two rows of seating and a storage area in the back. The four-wheel drive vehicle is ideal for camping because it is capable of navigating narrow back roads yet it has ample room for sleeping in the interior and storing camping supplies. The 4Runner is also known to be a reliable vehicle which makes it a great choice for camping. Using the 4Runner as a camping vehicle does not require any special skills or camping experience.

1
Fold down one side of the back row seats and lay down a sleeping pad and sleeping bag on the flat surface. Store your camping gear in the remaining available space. This is the easiest option and it does not require any alterations to the truck.
-
2
Fold down the entire back row seating and place an inflatable mattress on the flat space. Use the remaining space to store your camping gear. The inflatable mattress is a comfortable sleeping option but it does occupy a large amount of space and will require you to minimize the amount of gear you carry.

3
Use a portable propane stove to cook on the tailgate. The 4Runner has a fold down tailgate that is an ideal platform for cooking. Do not cook inside of the vehicle as the propane is flammable and the gas is dangerous while sleeping in the cab.
-
4
Store your gear in two plastic tubs. Use one for dry gear and one for wet gear. The wet tub will protect the vehicle from damage and it is easy to empty. The tubs are also effective because they are easily stacked to maximize the use of vertical space in the 4Runner.

5
Fold down the back row seats and build a raised sleeping platform from 2-by-4 lumber and plywood. The platform is semi-permanent but it drastically increases the amount of storage for gear. Store your gear in tubs and bags beneath the sleeping area and use the doors and tailgate to access the gear.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your camping simple in the truck. The less gear you carry the easier it will be to remain comfortable in the SUV.
Crack a window while sleeping in the 4Runner. The air flow will eliminate any chance of carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust and accidental propane leaks.
