How to Demagnitize Pliers

How to Demagnitize Pliers thumbnail
A magnetizer will quickly magnetize or demagnetize small handheld tools such as these pliers, enabling you to pick up small metal items in magnetized mode.

Although magnetized pliers are handy when it comes to picking up small metal objects, when it comes to replacing those objects it is much easier to do so with a set of demagnetized pliers. Hand-held magnetizers are small and affordable tools that, when used one way, magnetize and, used the opposite way, will demagnetize them. Magnetizers are available online and at most hardware stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Demagnetize Pliers

    • 1

Prepare your workspace and set down the pliers, magnetizer and screw or bolt you will use to test whether the process worked correctly.

    • 2

Check the labels on your magnetizer to determine where you must insert your pliers. On most magnetizers, the top is for demagnetizing and the bottom for magnetizing.

    • 3

Grasp your pliers and and hold your magnetizer steady. Insert the pliers into the demagnetizing section fully, then remove them.

    • 4

Brush your pliers over the screw or bolt to see if they are still magnetized. If the screw or bolt attaches itself to the hand tool, repeat Step 3 until the desired result is achieved.

    • 5

To magnetize your pliers, simply insert them into the magnetized slot and remove them. Check to see if the process worked by attempting to pick up the screw or bolt.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can leave the pliers in the magnetizing slot to give them even more magnetic power.
