Low-e window coatings are made from a thin layer of metal oxide that reduces heat transfer through the window. Low-e coating provides thermal or UV protection to help keep your home at a comfortable temperature and limit sun rays inside your home that can fade furniture. Maintenance of low-e windows is similar to any other window cleaning. Use ammonia-free and alcohol-free cleaners, and don't use any abrasives or scrapers. Basic care can restore shine and clarity to your low-e windows.
Things You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Spray bottle
- Ammonia and alcohol-free glass cleaner
- Microfiber cloths or paper towels
- Garden hose
Mix 1 part white vinegar and 10 parts water in a spray bottle, or use an alcohol and ammonia-free glass cleaner.
Apply the glass cleaner to a microfiber cloth or paper towels. Wipe the interior of the window thoroughly in one direction, using straight strokes to remove any dirt or dust. Use clean cloths or paper towels, and apply more glass cleaner as needed.
Spray the exterior windows with a garden hose to rinse away any dirt or debris. You can also clean the windows on the outside using the indoor method. Use a ladder if necessary to reach the windows.
Tips & Warnings
- If you use a ladder to clean the window exterior, don't stand on the top two rungs or lean away from the ladder.
