How to Use a Linksys Wireless-B Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz

The Linksys Wireless-B notebook adapter provides a way for you to add a wireless card to your laptop without taking it apart to install an internal card. This wireless adapter uses the PCMCIA Type II expansion protocol. The notebook adapter functions as a regular wireless card, so your laptop can connect to any existing wireless network it discovers.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down your laptop. Insert the Linksys wireless network adapter into the card slot. Hold the card so the label faces up for proper orientation.

    • 2

Turn on your laptop and insert the installation disk after Windows has started the "Found New Hardware" wizard. Click "Install the software automatically (recommended)." Click "Continue Anyway" if a warning appears regarding the drivers. Click "Finish" to finalize the driver and hardware installation.

    • 3

Right click the wireless network connection icon in your system tray. Choose "View available wireless networks." Click to select your wireless network from this list and select "Connect." Enter a network key if you use one, then click "OK." Your laptop should connect to the wireless network.

Tips & Warnings

  • The system tray is typically found in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, adjacent to the computer's clock. Several different icons are shown here, such as applications running in the background and operating system programs. Your wireless network icon resembles either a monitor with broadcast waves or a set of signal bars.
