How Do I Zip a File for Mac?

Zipping a pile of clothes into a suitcase compresses them so they take up less space. Similarly, zipping files on your Mac to create a .zip archive compresses them and reduces their size. While a number of third-party applications for zipping files and using other methods of compression are available, you don't need them to zip a file, because the Mac's OS X operating system has this capacity built in. The Finder of your Mac includes three methods for zipping files.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the file you want to zip. To select multiple files, hold down the "Shift" key while you click. Go to the "File" menu and scroll down to "Compress."

    • 2

For a direct method, Control-click or right-click the file you want to zip. Scroll down to "Compress" in the menu.

    • 3

In the third method, you start by selecting the file or files you want to zip. Click the gear-shaped "Action" menu at the top of the Finder window. Select "Compress" from the "Action" menu.
