How to Make Starch for Ironing

For crisper collars and smoother fabrics, spritz starch on your garments when ironing. Heat from your iron will make your starch-sprayed fabrics more crisp. Starch also helps garments stay pressed longer than when using an iron alone. Cheaper than commercial starch products, you can whip up a starch recipe with ingredients and supplies commonly found in most homes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a measuring cup with water to 1 cup.

    • 2

Pour the 1 cup of water into a spouted or shallow container.

    • 3

Place the container into the microwave. Heat the liquid for 90 seconds. When the water comes out of the microwave it should feel warm to hot. Heating the water helps the corn starch dissolve.

    • 4

Measure out a heaping 1 Tbsp. of corn starch.

    • 5

Empty the corn starch from the measuring spoon into the container of water.

    • 6

Place a wooden spoon into the container and stir the mixture into the corn starch until it is completely dissolved.

    • 7

Unscrew the lid on the spray bottle and set is aside.

    • 8

Set an appropriately sized funnel -- one that matches the size of the spray bottle opening -- on top of the spray bottle's opening.

    • 9

Pour the starch mixture into the spray bottle.

    • 10

Remove the funnel and screw the top back onto the bottle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shake the spray bottle until the mixture dissolves each time before ironing.

  • Spray only a thin layer of the starch across the fabric when ironing.

  • Alternatively, you can make a larger batch of starch and dip your clothing into the starch solution. Once dry, slightly moisten the garments and iron.
