How to Read eBooks

The term "eBook" is short for "Electronic book." It refers to books that are in an electronic format and available on the internet. There are various kinds of eBook files, and each type often requires a different kind of e-reader program. You can generally read any kind of eBook on the Internet with the right program, but there are also E-reader devices like the Kindle or the Nook that mostly use the EPUB format.

Instructions

Download and install Microsoft Word (see Resources). This program may also already be on your computer, depending on the bundle that came installed. You can use it to read eBooks in the DOC format. It also allows you to do word-processing functions.

    • 2

Download and install Adobe Acrobat. This program is free, and it will let you read eBooks that are in the PDF format just by double-clicking on them after installation. PDF books are one of the most common formats for eBooks online.

    • 3

Install a program that will help you read EPUB format Ebooks, such as the plug-in for Firefox (see Resources). This allows you to view EPUB files directly from the Web browser. Some EPUB book files are available online for free. You can also use e-Reader devices such as Kindle or Nook to read them. E-reader devices cost around $100 and up depending on the reader. An eBook can cost around the same amount as a regular book, though the cost can vary there as well.
