How to Mix My Own Couscous Seasoning
For many families who live in the northwestern regions of Africa, couscous is a staple food. Couscous is made from the hard part of the wheat grain known as the semolina. Over the years, couscous has spread to many countries across the globe. As of 2011, you can order some variation of couscous in many U.S. restaurants. Create your own couscous seasoning by mixing a few fresh ingredients. Barefoot Contessa host Ina Garten recommends using basil leaves for your homemade couscous seasoning. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring cup
- Basil leaves
- Parsley leaves
- Cutting board
- Chef knife
- Mixing bowl
- Saffron threads
- Cumin
- Garlic powder
- Kosher salt
- Ground black pepper
- Spoon

Measure 1 cup of fresh basil leaves and 1 cup of fresh parsley leaves. Align the fresh leaves onto the center of a cutting board. Chop the basil and parsley finely using a chef's knife.

Place the finely chopped leaves into a mixing bowl. Pour in 1/2 tsp. of saffron threads. Add 1/4 tsp. of ground cumin and 1/8 tsp. of garlic powder.

Mix in 1 tsp. of kosher salt and 1/2 tsp. of ground black pepper. Stir the contents of the mixing bowl using a spoon. Sprinkle your homemade seasoning over couscous for a low-fat side dish or snack.
