Cut a section out of the pool's plumbing with a PVC hacksaw. Connect a salt generator to the pool's plumbing lines, utilizing PVC primer and glue. Allow the connections to dry for at least 12 hours.

Pour 50 pounds of pool-grade salt into the pool water for every 5,000 gallons of water in the pool. Brush any salt that settles down on the pool floor with a brush to help it dissolve.

Turn on the pool system. Start up the salt water generator by pressing the power button on the generator's console. Allow the pool to circulate for at least 12 hours.

Test the salt content of the water manually with a salt test strip or check the salt level output on the generator's console. Recommended salt levels are 3,200 parts per million. If the salt reads lower, add one 50-pound bag of salt and recheck the level until 3,200 ppm is reached. If the level reads higher than 3,200, partially drain the water a few inches and add fresh water to dilute the salt content until you reach 3,200 ppm.
