A jump drive's icon is visible whenever the unit is connected.

A USB flash drive, also called a "jump drive," is a form of storage unit that is used to store and share computer content. Much like a typical hard disk, a jump drive is capable of holding any type of data, where the limit is only set by its storage capacity. Moreover, you can customize a jump drive by implementing a custom icon alongside its volume label. Although not too user-friendly, this option allows you to distinguish a jump drive from other devices better when connected to a computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the jump drive to your computer. Locate the icon you wish to use, right-click it and select "Copy."

    • 2

Open the "Computer" management utility from the "Start" menu. Click the jump drive from the list of storage devices displayed.

    • 3

Right-click a field within the jump drive's root level and select "Paste" to move the icon into the unit.

    • 4

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories. Launch the "Notepad" applet.

    • 5

Type "[Autorun]" -- without the quotation marks -- into the text document. Press "Enter" to start a new line and input "Icon=YourIconName.ico" without the quotation marks. Note that "YourIconName.Ico" represents the actual name of the icon you wish to use, and thus, you must name it accordingly within Notepad.

    • 6

Go to "File." Click "Save As." Name the file "Autorun.INF" and save it under the jump drive's root level, where the icon also resides. Note that you must input ".Inf" as part of the file name; otherwise, the file's extension would remain .TXT, rendering the procedure unsuccessful.

    • 7

Disconnect and reconnect the jump drive to your computer to apply the new icon.

Tips & Warnings

  • To use an existing image as an icon, you must convert it to the ICO format, using any available image conversion utility. For example, Dynamic Drive's FavIcon Generator provides an efficient online solution to convert images. Browse for the image you need, then click "Convert" to turn it into an icon file.
