Even if it's a beautiful day, it may not be enjoyable out on your balcony if it is a mess.

A balcony can be a place of refuge -- a quiet escape where you can enjoy the scenery and take in a breath of fresh air. Sadly, the balcony can also be a refuge for dust and bird droppings. Thus, just like the interior of your home, the balcony must be regularly cleaned. With a thorough cleaning, your balcony can once again be a source of solace rather than aggravation. All that's required to accomplish the transformation are some basic cleaning supplies and spare time.

Step 1

Remove furniture, potted plants and any other objects from the balcony. This will clear the balcony, making it easier to thoroughly clean the floor and other surfaces.

Step 2

Sweep the floor of the balcony with a quality, stiff-bristled broom. Sweep the entire surface, including the corners, to remove all loose dirt and leaves. Sweep the debris onto a dust pan and discard in a trash bag.

Step 3

Mix a multi-surface cleaner into a bucket of warm water. Dampen a clean rag or scrub brush in the cleaning solution and scrub the walls and/or railings of the balcony. Be sure to scrub the corners to remove cobwebs or accumulations of dirt. After scrubbing, use a clean rag or sponge to rinse the surfaces with fresh water.

Step 4

Clean any exterior windows or glass, such as a sliding glass door, accessible from the balcony. Spray a commercial window cleaner onto the glass and wipe clean with paper towels. Continue until the glass is clean and streak-free.

Step 5

Scrub or mop the floor of the balcony. Combine a fresh mixture of multi-surface cleaner and warm water in a bucket. If the floor of the balcony has a fairly smooth surface, such as wood or tile, a mop should suffice. If the floor has a rough surface, such as concrete, you will need to use a scrub brush. In this case, dip the brush in the cleaning solution and scrub the floor by hand. If any residue remains after cleaning, use a mop and fresh water to go over the floor.

Step 6

Clean any furniture that had been on the balcony. Use a clean cloth or sponge, multi-surface cleaner and warm water to wipe down the furniture. Rinse with clean water and allow the furniture to air dry. Move the furniture, as well as any other objects, back onto the balcony.
