Windows Vista is an operating system used on Windows-based computers. When you turn on your computer, the Vista operating system goes through the boot process to bring up the graphical user interface. When the computer isn't booting properly, your first thought could be what repair shop you need to take it to. You don't have to spend any money fixing your computer. Instead, fix the problems with your Windows Vista boot log from the command prompt with just a couple of keystrokes.

Step 1

Insert the Windows Vista Setup DVD into the DVD drive on your computer. Restart the computer.

Step 2

Press any key on the keyboard when you are prompted to do so.

Step 3

Choose the language that you speak, the time of day, the currency you use and the keyboard you are using on the computer. Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4

Click on the "Repair Your Computer" option.

Step 5

Click on the "Windows Vista" operating system from the menu and then click on the "Next "button.

Step 6

Click "Command Prompt" in the System Recovery Options menu. Type "Bootrec.exe" into the command prompt and press the "Enter" key.

Step 7

Allow the computer to go through the repair process and restart. If the computer isn't fixed, restart the process and type "Bootrec.exe/fixboot" in the command prompt.

Step 8

Set the computer so it boots from a Windows Vista DVD. See your manufacturer's manual on how to start your computer from a DVD.
