How to Upgrade a DIMM
One of the most common problems of owning a computer is the fact that after some time, the computer seems to slow down. The performance and speed of a computer depends to a great extent on its available memory. Changing and upgrading your computer's memory DIMMs (dual in-line memory modules) will enhance the power, functionality and speed of your computer.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- DIMMs of memory (type and specifications depend on your system)

1
Determine which kind of DIMM is compatible with your computer. You can find this on the owner's manual or in the motherboard documentation. Also determine the maximum memory your computer (or motherboard) supports. Use this information to decide which model and size of DIMM to purchase.
-
2
Remove the sliding panel of your desktop computer (usually the panel located on the left side of the CPU). Be careful not to touch any components nor to pull any loose wires. The DIMMs are usually located near the main processor.
Laptop computers have the memory DIMMs located either under the keyboard or under a cover in the back of the laptop. Consult your owner's manual to find out which is the case.
If the cover is on the bottom, use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the cover. If it is under the keyboard, remove the keyboard. Most keyboard release devices are near to top row of keys.

3
Identify the DIMM you wish to replace. It will be in a long, thin slot along the motherboard with hooks on each side.
-
4
Release the hook at one end of the DIMM. Pull the same end of the DIMM very carefully.
-
5
Release the other hook and pull the DIMM up, holding it from the ends. Repeat steps four and five for each DIMM you wish to replace.
-
6
Place the new DIMMs on the same slot were the old ones use to be. Press firmly until you hear the little hooks make a snap sound. Repeat this process for each DIMM until all of them are installed.
-
7
Replace the cover of your desktop or laptop.

Tips & Warnings
Save the plastic wrappers from the new DIMMs to store the old ones.
Always use DIMMs of the same size. If you want to get 8 GB of memory you can use two DIMMs of 4 GB or four DIMMs of 2 Gb each; do not use one DIMM for 4 GB and two of 2 GB each.
Be sure to touch metal before opening your computer, so you can discharge any static electricity that might have built up in your body.
Be careful when opening your computer. Letting dust get in or touching some parts might damage your computer.
Always unplug the computer before opening it.
