How to Put on a Tattoo Stencil
Many tattoo artists do not tattoo by freehand. Most will make sure that they draw the tattoo perfectly by first transferring a stencil of the desired design onto the client's skin. The stencil lines serve as a guide for the artist to follow as he or she inks in the tattoo. It's important to apply a stencil correctly so that it leaves a dark, crisp image of the design on the area that will be tattooed.

1
Clean the area where the tattoo stencil will be applied with soap and water then blot the skin dry with a paper towel.
-
2
Shave all hair off of the area with a razor.
-
-
3
Rub the skin where the tattoo will go with unscented deodorant. This will help the stencil ink adhere to the skin and darken the lines of the design.
-
4
Apply the stencil carefully, with the ink side facing down. Smooth it out against the skin to remove any bumps and to transfer a crisp design. Allow the stencil to sit on the skin for a few seconds.
-
5
Remove the stencil paper slowly. An outline of the tattoo design will appear on the skin. Allow the design to dry fully before tattooing.
