How to Repair a Broken Flush Handle on a Toilet
A broken flush handle on a toilet can put your whole toilet out of commission. The handle on the outside of the tank lifts a rod, which is connected to a chain that raises the flapper in the bottom of the tank. Once the flapper is raised, the water rushes out of the tank and into the bowl to carry away the waste inside. Because replacement handles are so inexpensive and easy to install, the best way to repair a broken one is to replace it instead. Does this Spark an idea?

Turn off the water supply for the toilet. The water supply valve can be be found on the ground or wall behind the toilet tank. Rotate the handle to the right to shut off the water supply.

2
Flush the toilet. This will get rid of some of the water in the tank and give you more room to work. Remove the tank lid and set aside.

3
Unhook the flapper chain from the end of the handle flush rod. These are usually looped or clipped into place. If needed, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to help unclip the chain.

4
Hold the handle steady with one hand. Take your other hand and locate the coupling on the inside of the toilet tank, directly behind the handle. Turn the coupling to the right to loosen (remember, it's on backwards.) Use a pair of pliers, if needed.

5
Pull the handle out of the front of the tank. Slip the coupling off the end of the handle flush rod.

Insert a new handle into the front of the toilet. Hold this in place with one hand. Slip the coupling over the end of the toilet flush rod until it is flush with the threads on the back of the handle on the inside of the tank. Tighten the coupling by turning it to the left.

7
Reconnect the chain to the end of the flush handle. Turn on the water supply by rotating the handle to the left. Allow the tank to fill. Flush the toilet and check to make sure that the handle is working properly. Replace the lid.
