How to Record Sound When Watching a Movie on Windows Media Player
Using your computer to record a sound playing on your computer may sound tricky, but it's actually not. Windows has a built-in application to record sound, called "Sound Recorder," and most PCs and laptops have headphone and line-in jacks for listening and recording, respectively. You can use Sound Recorder, along with these audio jacks, to record a sound clip from a movie playing in Windows Media Player.

1
Queue up the clip you'd like to record in Windows Media Player. Make note of the start time of the clip and the end time. This is very important, as you won't be able to hear the clip itself while you're recording it.

2
Plug one end of your stereo cable into the "microphone" jack on your PC, then connect the other end of the cable to your "line-in" jack.

3
Start Windows Sound Recorder by clicking "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "Sound Recorder."
-
4
Click the red "record" button in Sound Recorder, then switch to Windows Media Player and click the "play" button for your movie.
-
5
Stop Sound Recorder using the black "stop" button when you want the recording to stop, then save your file by clicking "File" > "Save As." Click the "pause" button in Windows Media Player to stop the video clip from playing.
