How to Download XP Service Pack 1 When Upgrading From Windows 2000
If you are running Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000, you can upgrade to Windows XP without losing data or applications stored to the hard drive. To configure Windows XP to perform at its best following an upgrade, download and install the latest updates and service packs for the operating system. Windows XP Service Pack 1, or SP1, improves the operating system's security, software and hardware compatibility, and reliability. To upgrade to Windows XP SP1 from Windows 2000, download the update from the Microsoft Download Center.

Log in to Windows 2000 as an administrator. Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive.

Click "Install Windows," or click "Start," then "Run" and type "<optical drive>:\setup.exe" into the dialog box. Replace "<optical drive>" with the letter assigned to the disc drive. Click "OK" or press "Enter."

Choose "Upgrade" from the "Installation Type" drop-down menu. Click "Next."

Read the license terms. Click "I Accept This Agreement" and click "Next."

Locate the product key on the back of the Windows XP CD sleeve. Enter the full product key into the available fields. Click "Next."

Select whether or not to view the upgrade details, then click "Next." Windows XP will install itself over Windows 2000.

Enter your login information to set up a user account on Windows XP. Connect to the Internet, and navigate to the Microsoft Download Center. Download Windows XP SP1 to the hard drive.

Double-click the download to install the service pack to Windows XP.
