How to Configure WRT54G to Verizon DSL Internet
The Cisco Linksys WRT54G is a wireless router that allows you to share one Internet connection among several computers using either a wired or wireless connection. To set up the WRT54G with Verizon DSL service, you need to connect the router to the Verizon DSL modem, connect a computer to the router using an Ethernet cable and configure the router for "Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet" (PPPoE) access with your Verizon DSL username and password.

Examine the connections on the back of the WRT54G to identify four adjacent Ethernet ports (the LAN ports) and one additional Ethernet port set off to the side by itself (the WAN port).

Insert one end of an Ethernet cable into the WAN port on the WRT54G and the other end into the Ethernet port of the Verizon DSL modem.

Insert one end of an Ethernet cable into one of the four LAN ports on the WRT54G and the other end into the LAN port on the computer.
Configure the Router

Click "Start -- Internet Explorer" on the computer. Type "http://192.168.1.1" in the browser address bar and press "Enter."

Type "admin" for the router's username. Type "admin" for the router's password and press "Enter" to go to the router's setup options.

Change the "Internet Connection Type" under the "Internet Setup" section by clicking on the drop-down list box and selecting "PPPoE."

Type your Verizon DSL username, which is typically your Verizon DSL email address, into the "User Name:" box. Type your Verizon DSL password into the "Password:" box. Click "Save" at the bottom of the screen to save the settings.

Shut down the computer, unplug the WRT54G and unplug the Verizon DSL modem, in that order. Wait for one minute. Turn on the Verizon DSL modem, wait 30 seconds, turn on the WRT54G and turn on the computer.

Click "Start -- Internet Explorer" and test that you have Internet access. You can now configure the wireless setup options in the router such as the broadcast name, wireless security and administrator password.
