The Best Way to Give Up Dating

The Best Way to Give Up Dating thumbnail
Take a vacation from dating to focus on personal growth.

Dating is an exhausting, fickle process filled with ups and downs. If you're fed up with the unpredictability of the dating game, it may be best to give it up in favor of more individualistic endeavors. Focus on your own personal growth rather than on how someone else can help fulfill you. Giving up your orchestrated search for love will allow it to emerge organically, often when you least expect it.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to any people you've been dating and explain that you want to end your romantic relationship. Be honest yet respectful of their feelings. Explain that you want to focus on yourself for a while and, if you want, tell them you wish to remain friends.

Do things you enjoy and at which you excel. For example, if you love writing and think of yourself as a good writer, start a blog or work on a novel. If you're into physical fitness, set new goals and push yourself to a higher level. Participate also in activities that give you a sense of accomplishment -- run a half-marathon, enter an amateur photography competition or sign up for cooking classes.

    • 3

Try something completely new and different from your regular routine. Try something you've never had the time or money -- or emotional support from a significant other -- to do. Challenge yourself by taking up hobbies that are slightly outside your comfort zone. For example, if you've always had an interest in scuba diving but have never gotten around to trying it, take scuba lessons and plan a scuba diving adventure.

    • 4

Take a vacation by yourself. Use this time to get used to enjoying your own company. Read books on the beach, take long walks and watch your favorite films. Indulge in the fact that you do not have to follow anyone else's schedule or tend to the needs of anyone but yourself.

    • 5

Find an opportunity to give back to the community or help the underprivileged. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen, donate your time to help inner-city school kids or meet with seniors at a nursing home. These activities will give you perspective on what's important and allow you to see how dating can sometimes be a self-indulgent and trite endeavor.

Spend time with your friends. Meet up with friends you haven't seen in a while, perhaps those who were put on the back burner when you were busy dating. Enjoy the supportive, uncomplicated relationships of true friends as a nice alternative to the chaotic dating game.
