Classified ads in local newspapers or magazines are beneficial to both the reader and the publication. Instructions

1. Choose the appropriate category for your advertisement. Most newspapers have separate sections for personals, jobs and general merchandise for sale.

2. Contact the classifieds manager or person in charge of advertising. They will explain the rates and sizing available. Some publications charge by the line. Some allow a picture for an additional charge.

3. Write your advertisement. Be concise and clear. Avoid major spelling errors or mistakes. Leave a contact number or email address if necessary. Do not give away too much personal information.

4. Submit your advertisement to the publication. Advertisements are usually screened by an editor and occasionally revised. Your advertisement will be rejected if it is explicit or advertises illicit material or activities.

5. Renew your advertisement if necessary. Most publications allow for the renewal of an ad at the end of each designated run period.
