How to Write a Student Teacher Letter of Recommendation

A student teacher may be an ideal candidate to get hired to become a teacher, but before that can happen, she'll need to secure an interview with the employer. A good resume and credentials are essential for identifying a potential job candidate, but a student teacher stands a better chance of getting an interview for a job when she has a letter of recommendation. Keep the letter to one page. Start with an opening, provide specific details in the body and close with a summary and a recommendation.

  • State who you are, to demonstrate your credibility as a reference for the student teacher. For example, you might be the teacher's instructor or the principal where he did his work, or the parent of a child that the student teacher greatly helped. Write how long the student teacher did work at your institution, and describe the type of students and class or classes he taught.

  • Give an idea of how the student teacher works with others. Note, for example, if she is organized, a good role model, a team player, accepting of criticism, able to finish tasks and has other attributes that will serve her well as a teacher.

  • Write specific examples of why the student teacher is a great candidate. Highlight classroom achievements, demonstrating a wide range of skills, such as creativity, management and curriculum development.

  • Note the technical abilities of the teacher, such as a strength in using the Internet for research, or classroom software for teaching specific subjects. If the teacher is knowledgeable in using online library catalogs and teaching students how to use it to further their studies, this is useful information to put in the letter of recommendation.

  • Close with a summary of the student teacher's qualifications. Add a direct statement that indicates you highly recommend the student teacher for the position of teacher.
