DIY Red Rose Bridal Bouquets

DIY Red Rose Bridal Bouquets thumbnail
Red roses are a classic choice for bridal bouquets.

A red rose bouquet is a classic and romantic choice for brides that makes a statement when carried against a white bridal gown. Since many florists will charge several hundreds of dollars to create a bridal bouquet, brides on a budget may want to create their own bouquets for a fraction of the cost. These DIY bridal bouquets should be made the night before or morning of the wedding, and kept in the refrigerator or a cool environment to ensure the flowers stay fresh.

Instructions

  1. Simple Red Rose Bouquet

    • 1

Remove the thorns from the roses while wearing thick gloves.

    • 2

Bend the stem about an inch from the bottom until it splits. Scrape the end with a sharp knife to expose the inner stem. This process "conditions" the roses so they will absorb maximum water and stay fresh-looking.

    • 3

Fill a tall pitcher or other container with 2 inches of boiling water and place the stems inside for several minutes. Drain the water and replace with cold water. Let the flowers soak for two hours.

    • 4

Hold a single rose in your hand, then surround it with concentric circles of roses to create the rounded shape. Hold the roses tightly together as you go. Once you have the shape you want, bind the stems together just below the flower heads with a piece of twine.

    • 5

Bind stems together in the middle with a rubber band and trim the bottoms with clippers to get an even cut at the length you want.

    • 6

Wrap a ribbon around the stems starting at about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom. Wrap over the end of the ribbon so it is hidden and continue wrapping up the stems until the ribbon covers the twine. Secure the ribbon in place tightly with corsage pins.

    Embellished Red Rose Bouquet

    • 7

Follow steps 1 through 5 above to create the simple base for an embellished bouquet.

    • 8

Place sprigs of baby's breath in between roses throughout the bouquet for a delicate white embellishment.

    • 9

Stick long pearl-headed corsage pins through the center of each rosebud for a glamorous touch.

    • 10

Wrap a strand of small faux pearls around your ribbon until it is completely covered. Hot glue the ends in place.
