How to Plant Squash Plants
Squash is a plant, like zucchini and pumpkins, that produces fruit. These gourds grow either on vines or bushes and are broken into two varieties -- summer squash and winter squash. Even though so many varieties are available, squash has similar characteristics. All types need warm soil and plenty of sun. These are not plants that are tolerant of frost or cold weather. Their growing season is extended if the seeds are started indoors. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Sew seeds indoors four weeks before the last expected frost. Plant the seeds in individual seed pots filled with rich, sterile soil. Water them thoroughly and cover with a plastic cover. Set them in a warm location and wait for them to sprout. Once sprouted, move to a sunny location until it is warm enough to transplant them.

Till the soil and mix in an organic fertilizer like compost. Well-rotted manure also works. Compost and manure will help nourish the plants while they grow.

Plant vine seedlings 6 feet apart with at least 7 feet between rows. These plants spread out a lot and need plenty of room for the vines to grow. Water the plants thoroughly after planting and give them 1 inch of water a week. Plant bush seedlings 3 feet apart with 5 feet between rows.
