How Do I Change a Hard Drive on a Dell Midtower Computer?

The midtower form factor computers produced by Dell include hard drives that are easily removed and replaced. Reasons for changing a hard drive include replacing a damaged hard drive, upgrading the hard drive to a newer drive with larger capacity, and replacing a hard drive to with a different one to prevent interception of personal information when recycling or selling the computer. Dell midtower computers are designed so that the hard drive can be replaced without any tools.

Instructions

1. Power off the computer.

2. Open the computer case. Dell computers are designed to have their cases opened with either a lever or a push-button.

3. Disconnect the power and data cables from the hard drive.

4. Remove the hard drive by squeezing the clips and pulling it from the case.

5. Install the clip onto the replacement hard drive.

6. Insert the replacement drive back into the Dell midtower case and reconnect the cables.

7. Close the case and power on the computer.
