How to Convert Inches Into Square Yards for a Carpet

Proper conversion means you come home with the right amount of carpeting.

Carpeting is usually sold in square footage or square yardage, but if you have room measurements in only inches, you are not completely out of luck. By taking the linear measurements, you can calculate an area in square inches, which you can then easily measure in square yards by mathematical conversion. Converting from inch dimensions to square yards can help you better select and budget for your new floor.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of the carpet in inches. For this example, the width is 100 inches and the length is 150 inches.

2. Multiply the two dimensions of the carpet together. For this example, 100 inches multiplied by 150 inches equals 15,000 square inches.

3. Divide the area by 1,296 to convert to square yardage. For this example, dividing 15,000 square inches by 1,296 converts to 11.574 square yards.
