How to Plant Gazanias

How to Plant Gazanias thumbnail
Gazanias invite butterflies into the garden.

Ground covers don't have to be plain green. In fact, for sunny areas, a little pop of color in the summer may be just what the landscape needs. In hot, dry areas, a good plant to do the job is the gazania, a perennial ground cover. With brightly-colored flowers that close on dark days and in the evening, gazania provides a carpet of color, 6 to 12 inches high. Gazania requires full sun, all day, and does best in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 8b through 11. In zone 8, plant the gazania in April or May. If you live in zone 9, get the gazania into the ground from March through May or September through October. Zone 10 and 11 gardeners can plant gazania from February to May or November through December. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all weeds from the planting bed. If you need to use an herbicide, check the label to determine how long to wait to plant after the application.

    • 2

Add sand to heavy or clay soil. Pour a 3-inch layer onto the bed and till it to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 3

Plant the gazania plants in holes that are twice the diameter of the nursery pots in which they are growing. When planting for ground cover, space the plants 12 to 18 inches apart. They will grow together within three months.

    • 4

Water the gazanias until the top 6 inches of soil are moist and keep the soil moist until the plants begin growing. After that, allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry before watering.
