How to Use an iStockPhoto for My Twitter Background

You can personalize your Twitter profile page with your own color scheme, custom background color and even a custom background image. Graphic marketplaces such as iStockphoto sell millions of photographs and illustrations that you can use to add a more personal touch to your Twitter page. Incorporating a stock image into your profile is easy, but you need to make sure you buy the right image first.

Instructions

    • 1

Search the iStockphoto website for keywords and/or color palettes that best represent you. For example, if you are a fan of ballet, you might browse ballerina images.

    • 2

Confirm that an image's file size and dimensions match Twitter's guidelines once you find an image that you like by clicking on the image thumbnail to see the detail page. The maximum Twitter background file size is 800KB, a little less than one megabyte. Try to find an image with the largest height with a file size of under 800KB.

    • 3

Consider how the image you choose will appear as a Twitter background. The new Twitter design reveals only the first 41 pixels of your background image, to the left of your time line area. This is not a lot of space.

    • 4

Purchase enough iStockphoto credits to cover the price of the image you selected. Return to the Web page for the image you want to use and complete your purchase with credits. All iStockphoto purchases are credit-based; they do not have an exact cost in dollars. Save the image to your computer.

    • 5

Log in to your Twitter account. Click on your name in the upper-right corner and choose "Settings." Select the "Design" tab.

    • 6

Click "Change Background Image" and click "Choose File." Select the image you saved from iStockPhoto. Click "Save Changes." Your iStockphoto image is now your Twitter background.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a photo editing website or software program to adjust the size and/or crop the left side of the image to make it better fit your Twitter profile.

  • The basic iStockphoto license allows you to use the image you purchased on your own personal website or profile page, but does not grant you the right to re-distribute that image. You cannot sell the image to others or let others download it to use as their Twitter backgrounds.
