How to Get into Forensic Science

How to Get into Forensic Science thumbnail
Most forensic science technicians work in the lab.

Forensic science employs people mainly in the capacity of science technicians. Basically, people who work in forensic science investigate crimes, crime scenes and physical evidence. This means that police departments across the country are in need of forensic science technicians to join their investigative teams. You can also specialize in a specific type of forensic science once you're in the field, such as DNA analysis or weapons tests.

Instructions

    • 1

Take lots of high school and math courses in high school. The higher level the coursework, the more it will help you get into a career in forensic science. Biology and chemistry classes can play a big part in your development because they will help get you accustomed to lab work. Since much of forensic science involves presenting your findings, sorting the data you find can be as important as the experiments themselves.

    • 2

Apply to a college that offers a bachelor's degree in forensic science. While some science technicians can have an associate's degree or certificate, when working in the forensic field, you will need a bachelor's degree. When visiting the college, meet with the heads of the forensic department if possible. Focus your questions on what hands-on opportunities are available, such as getting to help with the legwork on a real crime or getting a chance to view actual crime scenes. The more you are out in the field, the more people you will meet who can potentially advance your job prospects.

Complete any fieldwork that is required for your degree. Since forensic science is a hands-on job, you will often need to complete fieldwork under the supervision of an experienced technician. This real world experience will make you more attractive to potential employers and help you get into the field.

Utilize resources through your college's career department, as well as through organizations such as the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, to help you get into the field once you graduate. Police departments, hospitals and independent crime labs are all in need of forensic science technicians.
