How to Encode SMS Texts

How to Encode SMS Texts thumbnail
Using encryption software will keep your text messages from prying eyes.

With the right knowledge and tools, a hacker can pluck a text message out of the air and read it. Not only is this an invasion of your privacy, but if you have a habit of sending personal details in your text messages, such as bank information, then you may be at risk for identity theft. One way to prevent this is to install a piece of software on your phone that can encode your text messages.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an SMS encoding program. SecureGSM Pro, Secure Voice GSM and PhoneCrypt are three programs that you can consider. As of 2011, these programs cost between $300 and $400.

    • 2

Download and install the software program to your computer by double-clicking on the executable file. Once the installation is complete, restart your computer if necessary.

    • 3

Connect your USB cable or syncing cradle that came with your phone to your computer. Go to the "Start" menu and open your phone's syncing software. Select "Synchronize Phone." This will install the encoding software onto your phone.

    • 4

Go to the "Menu" on your phone, then to "Applications" and open up the encryption software.

    • 5

Go back to the "Menu," select "Text Messages" and click "New." Type up a text message as you normally would and click "Send." The text message will be sent encrypted and unreadable to anybody intercepting it.

    • 6

Note that the person on the other end receiving the text message will need to have the same software on his phone in order to decrypt and read the message.
