How to Soft Return in Open Office

Open Office provides a free alternative to programs in the Microsoft Office software suite. Using a soft return is useful in Open Office, especially when formatting a document to look a specific way. A soft return will create a single spaced line break at the end of a line of text and place the next line of text immediately under the previous. You can use this to group lines of text, even when the normal line formatting is double-spaced lines.

Instructions

  1. Insert a New Soft Return

    • 1

Type a line of text in the Open Office software. You can also click behind an existing line of text to place the cursor behind the text.

    • 2

Hold the "Shift" key on the keyboard and press the "Enter" key to create a soft return.

    • 3

Type the line of text. The new text will appear directly under the previous line of text.

Insert a Soft Return in Existing Text

    • 4

Left-click in front of the second line of text.

    • 5

Click the "Backspace" key on your keyboard. This will move the second line of text up to the same line as the first line of text.

    • 6

Hold the "Shift" key on the keyboard and press the "Enter" key to create a soft return in front of the second line of text. This will move the second line of text directly under the first line of text.
